Lewisâs mam seemed utterly worn out when we reached her house. She was clearly used to her son getting into trouble, but she had probably never dreamed that his endeavours would extend to being a suspect in a murder case. Her mousy hair was scraped back on top of her head, and her skin was sallow from lack of sleep. I imagined she had been up waiting all night for Lewis to hopefully come home, but to no avail. The heaviness of her eyes reminded me of the dark rings under my own, and I felt again the wave of tiredness that had been floating over me on and off for days now. For the moment, I was managing to ignore it with the help of caffeine, but it still crept up on me every now and then when I least expected it. At least my head was no longer banging.
While there, we were joined in the dark living room by Lewisâs sister, who seemed to be taking on the role of guardian when it came to her mam. Her young face was understandably stony, but I got the impression that her concern was more for her mam than Lewis. She stared ahead without expression as Mrs Albright told us what she knew of Lewisâs dealings with Carl Rawlson, and I thought I detected a hint of frustrated weariness, as if this was just the latest in a long line of her brotherâs exploits that she had had to sit through, and she was fed up of hearing about him.
Mrs Albright was as helpful as she could be, which I had to appreciate under the circumstances. After telling us again the names of all Lewisâs friends that she knew, she gave us a detailed and uncomplimentary review of Carl Rawlson, who was Lewisâs cousin on his dadâs side of the family. Mr Albright was no longer around and hadnât been for some years. But Lewis not only had managed to stay in touch with Carl, but also became entangled in his underhand web during the past year or so.
She knew he spent a lot of time over at the Tall Orders club with Carl, but she wasnât exactly sure what he got up to there. Lewis would never tell her whenever she asked, and a part of her had simply preferred not to know, but she knew that Carl and his club had a bad reputation. He was well known to be heavily involved in a variety of drugs, and anyone who went to Tall Orders did so at their own risk. It was infamous for violent fights breaking out, peopleâs drinks being spiked and overdoses. That didnât surprise her given the owner.
Her own experiences of Carl had been when he was much younger, and he had apparently not been very pleasant back then either. Rude, aggressive and conceited, by all accounts, it hadnât shocked her one bit that he had grown up to become a known criminal, and it was beyond her how he had got away with it for so long.
